"Because they're Top", he said.
I was sitting in TD's office, dutifully responding to the comments from my 700 closest friends concerning my analysis summary note. The physics coordinator drops by, and we briefly discuss a couple of his questions concerning the note. We conclude and TD promises the final revised one for the public will be ready by four.
"Yeah," I said. "there's a Top practice talk for Moriond ElectroWeak. I gotta find out how they're going to say stuff there without having any results approved."
"What do you mean?" the physics coordinator asks.
"Well," I replied. "there's no notes up on your summary page for collaboration approval."
"Yeah, but they still have lepton + jets."
"How?"
"That's the one that got special consideration because of the spokespeople."
A moment of silence ensues.
"I see. And why are some pigs more equal than others?"
He didn't parse the reference to my knowledge. "Because they're Top." he said.

To my credit, I didn't kill him on the spot. In fact, one might construe that I am one cold blooded snake, since I managed to keep my poker face, and merely asked comically for him to repeat that louder into my hidden mike. But a small vein in my forehead has begun to announce its presence.
Never let it be said that things are equitable around here.

Sadly, some pigs will always be more equal than others. It could be worse: They could be Truth. :)

Not so long as I draw breath.
So I note that you commented yesterday, though I didn't reply. You're an astronomer, yes (I cheated and looked at your ljinfo)? Are you simply observational, or tending towards the more exotic particle astro?

Simply observational

X-rays are as exotic as I get, although I have a general interest in early Universe cosmology, including the particle astrophysics aspects. Heck, I have a general interest in everything. :) I have known a few particle people, though, so I have some idea about what you folks do. Still, I have trouble imagining 700 co-authors. I've been sixth author out of seven, and first author out of six, but that's a large as my author lists have gotten. There's something strange about papers whose author lists are longer than their text.

Unfortunately, not as strange as it could be. In truth, there are a lot of really pretty useless people on that damn list. 'Retirement benefits' inflate it, as do the faculty people who just make certain we get money.
